What are the options to get to Gili Trawangan from Bali?

The most common and the quickest way is fast boat. Numerous fast boat operators occupy the Bali-Lombok strait daily so there are plenty to choose from. A journey with fast boat takes around two hours and price varies from IDR 250,000 to 750,000 for a one-way ticket.

Depend on where you are staying, fast boat from Bali departs from many harbours. From central Bali the closest ones are Padang Bai and Sanur, Serangan is closer to the south, and Amed is closer from the north. All fast boat operators provide complimentary shuttle service for passengers drop off and pick-up.

Another alternative is to go by flying. Lombok International Airport is located in Praya, central Lombok. From the airport you need to get to Bangsal harbor, about two-hours away. And then from Bangsal you can take fast boat, public boat, or private boat to Gili Trawangan.

What are the options to get to Gili Trawangan from Lombok?

No matter where you are in Lombok, it’s necessary to get to the harbor to cross to Gili Trawangan. The closest harbor to Gili Trawangan is Bangsal, about 60 km away from Lombok International Airport. From the airport, taxis are available to get you to the harbor or other destinations. And finally from Bangsal harbor, you can take a fast boat, private boat, or public boat.

Both public and fast boats are normally available from the morning until the afternoon. It can be crowded so it’s recommended to get to the harbour early in the morning around 8 a.m, and also the sea tends to be calmer at that time.

With the public boat, you will be charged IDR 15,000 per passenger. The journey to Gili T should take around 30-45 minute. Whereas with the fast boats you will be charged IDR 85,000 for a 15-20 minute journey.

Can you recommend good fast boat operators?

The number one recommendation is BlueWater Express. They are known to have the highest safety standard and the choice for those who prioritize safety, comfortability and reliability over price. The cost of one-way trip is around IDR 790,000.

If budget is your concern, Sindu Express offers another option for better value.
It’s not as highly-rated as the others on TripAdvisor but from our experience, it’s reliable.
They also operate relatively larger boats from many of their competitors.

What do we need to prepare for a fast boat trip?

Whenever possible, the best time to go by fast boat is in the morning as the strait between Bali and Lombok tends to be calmer. The sea can get rough during windy or bad weather, so it’s best to have an extra day or backup plan in case all marine traffic is temporarily closed for safety reason. It’s a good idea to bring some snacks, water and  sea sickness tablet with you.

It is necessary to book fast boat tickets in advance?

Most fast boat companies have online booking system on their website and it’s a good idea to book your tickets before your departure date, especially during the peak season. We’ll also be happy to reserve the tickets for you through our agents.

Is one-day trip to Gili Islands possible from Bali?

It’s recommended to spend at least one or two nights to fully experience what Gili Islands have to offer. Boat departures in the afternoon is rare due to less-than-ideal sea or weather condition. Boat schedules may also sometimes be cancelled unexpectedly for safety reason so it’s advised to have a day to spare. Booking your flight on the same day as your boat is also ill-advised.

Is there any direct international flights into Lombok ?

Yes, there are direct flights into Lombok from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. But most international flights arrive in Bali and from there it is easy to get to the Gilis either by fast boat or flying into Lombok. More visitors are now opting to take one of the fast boats from Bali to Gili islands. Journey by one of the fast boats from Bali is now much shorter and cheaper. It takes much longer to get to the new Lombok International Airport after it moved to Praya in central Lombok.

Is there any other alternative of flying?

Life on Gili

Is there a hospital on Gili?

There are only several clinics on all three Gilis. For serious healthcare the closest hospital is on the mainland in Mataram.

Should I be worried about malaria on Gili Islands?

While malaria can be dangerous in some regions in Indonesia, malaria prevention tablet is usually not required on Gili Islands. Both of our bedrooms have mosquito net and mosquito repellent spray is also provided.

Is there internet access on Gili Islands?

Free wi-fi is accessible throughout our villa but when you’re away, Indonesian SIM card can be purchased for mobile internet connection.

Does power outage happen regularly on Gili Islands?

The power grid on Gili Islands is constantly being improved but power outage is unpredictable and may happen a few times in a month. The villa’s generator is reserved for certain necessities as the noise level can be disturbing and the limited supply of gasoline on the island.

Are there ATMs on the island?

Yes, there are ATM/cash point machines on the island. You can also change money at money changers along the main strip, though the rates may not be attractive. Big local banks such as Bank Mandiri, Danamon, BNI, BRI, and CIMB Niaga and Australian lender Commonwealth Bank all have their ATMs on the island.

How to get around on Gili Trawangan?

It’s easy getting around on the tiny island. You can rent a bike or take the horse cart, locally known as cidomo. There are no motorized transport on the island, so it is perfectly safe for children to run around. The villa is also located at the central district, so almost everything is within walking distance.

Is it safe to drink from the tap water?

No, it is not safe to drink the tap water in Gili Trawangan, as in other places in the country. We provide bottled water and water dispenser in the villa.

Are any dress restriction?

There are not many dress restrictions on the island where the dominant religion is Islam. However, visitors are asked to refrain from wearing swimming suits when they are not in or near the beach.

How can we get to another Gilis from Gili T?

Public slow boats are available twice daily, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Tickets varies from IDR 25,000 to IDR 35,000, bought directly at the harbour ticket office.

Fast boats are scheduled nearly every hour between all three Gilis. Expect to pay IDR 85,000 for one-way ticket to any Gili.

Get a private fast boat to suit your personal needs and they can usually be rented for IDR 350,000. Simply ask around at the harbour and you will surely find one.

Do not attempt to swim as the islands are actually a lot further than they look and the current can be very strong.

Staying at Ambary House

Is Ambary House far from the harbor?

The villa is located a little further from the crowded area, but still close enough to be reached by walking. Going on foot from the harbor takes around 10 to 20 minutes. But if you carry a lot of baggage or simply doesn’t feel like walking under the heat, our staff will be happy to arrange a horse-drawn carriage. One of our staff will always be waiting at the harbor at the time of guest arrival.

Are there lifeguards near the swimming pool?

No, there aren’t. The private villa’s swimming pool is unfenced, as is the case with most other swimming pools on the island. Children should be watched and supervised all the times when they are near or in the pool.

How many people can stay in the villa?

The villa accommodates up to four adults, with one extra bed upon request which is charged accordingly.

What time is the check-in and check-out?

Check-in time is 1 p.m. Check-out time is 11 p.m.

Do you accept credit cards?

Yes, we accept Visa/Mastercard, and almost any foreign currency.
